A Flash in the Pan
Tuesday, 03 January 2012 03:03
Whenever a prospector panning for gold sees something glint in the bottom of his pan, he becomes excitable, shouting about his good fortune to everyone in earshot. More often than not, the gold nugget turns out to be iron pyrite. This mineral's metallic luster and pale-to-normal, brass-yellow hue has earned it the nickname "fool's gold" because of its resemblance to gold. And the prospector's hopes of riches are dashed when it proves to be, not gold, but a 'flash in the pan'.

Conservatives became excited when the tea party caused disruptions at house congressional meetings in the summer of 2009 because they thought the rowdy outbursts were genuine. But, like 'fool's gold', the tea party is likely to be a 'flash in the pan'.

The freshmen group of Republican Representatives says their top priority is to reduce the national debt and federal budget deficit; nevertheless they have obstructed all realistic proposals and not achieved anything! However, with the failure of the super committee, they now find themselves in a quandary because the consequence of no action is automatic cuts to the military which are not popular with their supporters. Also the Bush tax cuts will expire at the end of 2012, burdening them with the largest tax increase because they will not exclude millionaires from any extension. Their resolve to reject everything President Obama proposes is backfiring!

Michelle Bachmann once accused Liberals in Congress of being un-American. She said that the American media should do a penetrating expose and take a look at the views of the people in Congress to find out whether they are pro-America or anti-America.

However, what is truly un-American is the desire of the Tea Party to sabotage anything President Obama proposes at the expense of the American people. The most un-American thing any member of Congress can do is to sign a pledge to an unelected lobbyist, Grover Norquist, which takes precedent over their constitutional oath of office.

Ironically, I finally agree with Michelle Bachmann on something... the media should investigate you and all your tea party friends with un-American extremist views.

You Should Be Ashamed to Call Yourself a Conservative!
Thursday, 25 August 2011 16:34

As someone who was born in South Africa under the Conservative Apartheid regime, I know and understand that "Conservative" politics can be very evil.

Conservatives will tell you that they believe in personal responsibility and that Government should not interfere in our lives. Yet they want to overturn the most personal decision in some women's lives, her right to choose. Ironically, if a pregnant woman chooses to have the baby, Conservatives vote to severely restrict any welfare to help her take care of her baby. On June 16, House Republicans voted to cut the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC), which offers food aid and educational support for low-income mothers and their children, by $868 million, or 13 percent.

Conservatives believe private enterprise creates the greatest opportunity and the highest standard of living for all. They preach that free markets produce more economic growth, more jobs and higher standards of living. Why then has the income gap between the richest and poorest Americans grown to its widest amount? Because the system is not a true free market - it is unfairly tilted to those at the top, using our tax dollars to subsidize them. The top-earning 20% of Americans - those making more than $100,000 each year - received 49.4% of all income generated in the US, compared with the 3.4% earned by those below the poverty line, according to newly released Census figures. As Warren Buffett recently said, he pays a lower effective income tax rate than his secretary does.

Conservatives think that a free and low-cost government-run program such as Medicare results in higher costs than if the program were run for profit by the private sector. But the cost of administration of Medicare in 2006 was 3.3%; whereas in the same period administrative overhead in private health insurance companies was between 14% and 22%. Beware of the Conservative Paul Ryan budget plan, led by Hanover's representative Eric Cantor. The elderly will receive a small Government contribution that they are supposed to use when they shop on their own for coverage from private health insurance companies. Ryan and Cantor's proposal will destroy Medicare as a defined-benefit plan and make it impossible for many poorer retirees to have heath care insurance at all.

Conservatives are determined to force the Government to abandon the sick and needy while providing greater tax cuts for wealthy Americans. The Conservative strategy of starving Government by reducing revenue through tax cuts is robbing the poor to give to the rich. It is probably the largest involuntary transfer of wealth in human history, it has been going on for 30 years, and it is picking up speed right now.

We have all heard the Conservative argument about "trickle-down economics." They try to convince us that that by cutting tax rates for the wealthy and lowering capital gains tax rates, GDP will increase, which in turn will bring in more tax revenues. But this theory was tried before in the 1890's and it failed. It was known as the horse-and-sparrow theory: If you feed the horse enough oats, some will pass through to the road for the sparrows. After all, why should the rich invest their money on risky ventures to "create jobs" when enough money is being handed to them for free? Even Alan Greenspan said last year that tax cuts do not pay for themselves. Tax cuts do not generate more revenue from the wealthy recipients than the revenue lost.

They claim that they emphasize and empower the individual to solve problems. This sounds great, but what does it really mean? Conservatives are destroying the fabric of American society and they are becoming more dangerous, especially in the threat they are posing to the working and middle class.

Conservatives are becoming more dangerous, and they are becoming more like the Conservative Apartheid Government where I was born and grew up.

Revenue Problem
Tuesday, 07 June 2011 05:09

The familiar cry of "We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem" is a false claim that we Democrats need to refute vigorously. John Boehner, with tears in his eyes, cries out, "The USA is bankrupt" ... but his statement is misleading and nonsense.

The gross domestic product (GDP) of the USA is about $14trillion. But our deficit is also around $14trillion. So to most people's thinking that means we as a country owe as much as we make. However, this is like comparing apples to oranges. The deficit should actually be compared to the total assets of the U.S. economy which are about $188 trillion. So the USA is not bankrupt. If the federal government defaults on its loans, no creditor, like China, would say, "OK we will forgive your debt!" Our creditors will simply tell the government to raise taxes and pay the debt. In other words, take a fair share from the largest corporations and billionaires to fix the problem.

A decade ago, the federal government was running a surplus. This was before George W. Bush decided to reduce the tax rate for all Americans but the biggest beneficiaries were the wealthiest Americans. He did this against the advice of Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve. The tax cuts, two unfunded wars and the unfunded Medicare Part D. Medicare Part D provided more profits to the health care insurance companies.

So with an escalation of expenses and a reduction of revenue during the Bush Administration, we don't have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem!

Amazing Horoscopes
Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:18

On a fateful day in mid-January my personality suddenly changed from being ambitious and practical as a Capricorn to becoming optimistic and cheerful as a Sagittarius.

In case you missed it, Professor Parke Kunkle announced that a wobble in the Earth's axis had magically changed most of our zodiac signs. And if you thought you were a Sagittarius, you may now be an Ophiuchus, a seeker of wisdom and knowledge.

As a result of the shift in the heavens, the Democratic future is also improving and President Obama's ratings are climbing. The President delivered a pitch-perfect speech at the memorial in Tucson AZ and we have high expectations for a spectacular State of the Union speech.

With the wind at our back and the stars realigning, we need to pay attention to the following article and build our grassroots organization for the 2011 election cycle. All of us in the HDC must realize that politics is not a spectator sport. It's a process with real consequences that we're invited to participate in, especially if we want to get results.
