Young Democrats at Lee-Davis High School

Fundraising Chair Stan Scott, and Mechanicsville District Chair Owen Chavoustie visited with the Lee-Davis High School Young Democrats in the fall to discuss the media, politics, and the campaign to unseat Eric Cantor in the Seventh District this November. After describing some of his experiences as a youth and in the Army, Stan covered a range of topics and answered questions about the reliability of the media, the meaning of the US Constitution, and issues confronting
government and citizens.
A dozen attentive students, mentored by Thomas Bosher-Perran, the Young Democrats’ faculty sponsor, asked probing questions and engaged in a lively back-and-forth. Students of course had questions about military service, the importance of education, and how to begin thinking about finding a satisfying career. But the core discussion focused on how young people can become involved in political campaigns and other activities. Drawing on his experience in political activism,
Stan told the group that volunteering to help candidates or causes they believe in can have a huge impact and give those who get involved a feeling of accomplishment, win or lose.
And he pointed out that for those considering a career in politics, the ground floor of volunteering
is the best place to start making connections, learning the ropes, and deciding whether this would be a fun career.
We can be proud of the young people who live in Hanover County—they are engaged, interested, thoughtful, and intelligent. And many of them have decided that they prefer the Democratic vision for America to Republican obstructionism in the name of corporate and lobbyist power. These young people are a source of activism today and optimism for the future, and we are happy to continue a strong relationship with the Lee-Davis High School Young Democrats.
