1. Democrats will preserve your Medicare.Republicans, led by Hanover's representative Eric Cantor, want to end Medicare. In its place they propose a "voucher system". This means you will get a small contribution to use as you search on your own for coverage from private insurance companies. You pay the rest... on average it will cost senior citizens at least $6,000 a year. Many retirees will not have the money and many will not qualify to buy health care insurance at any price. This inhumane proposal will literally be a death sentence for many American seniors. 2. Democrats put the interests of average Americans over the interests of big business.Republicans favor big business at the expense of hard working middle class Americans, like you and I. Here's an example: Democrats voted to eliminate tax breaks for big oil companies. Republicans, led by Hanover's representative Eric Cantor, voted to keep paying the oil industry $20 billion in tax subsidies over the next 10 years. The Republicans say this is to encourage oil companies to drill. The oil industry and its executives made the largest profits in the history of the world this year. Their executives paid taxes at lower rates than you and I. According to the IRS, some oil companies used offshore tax havens to pay no US income taxes at all. What more incentive do they need? (www.irs.gov) 3. Democrats promise to defend your Social SecurityRepublicans, led by Hanover's representative Eric Cantor, want to "privatize" Social Security. Privatizing Social Security is the same thing as eliminating Social Security. Instead of paying into the Social Security system and receiving a monthly pension when you retire, you will instead invest in the Wall Street casino known as the stock market. It means your financial security will depend on the whims of the stock market. When the stock market crashes again as it did in 2008, your financial future will crash right along with it. 4. Democrats want to end the Bush era tax cuts for millionaires and billionairesRepublicans, led by Hanover's representative Eric Cantor, want to make Bush-era tax breaks permanent for millionaires and billionaires. This tax give-away to powerful special interests is the main reason the US government has a budget deficit. Every millionaire's taxes are reduced by at least $139,000 every year and much more if you are a billionaire. Democrats want to end these tax breaks but keep tax cuts in place for Americans whose annual income is $250,000 or less. That's you and I, and 98% of Americans. Before the Bush tax cuts of a decade ago, the Federal Government had a surplus. Contrary to what you might hear, the US has a revenue problem, not a spending problem. ![]() |
