Election Day: The Countdown Begins

Folks, it’s hard to take our eyes away from what’s going on in Washington, but we need your undivided attention. We’re in the home stretch of a critical legislative election in Virginia; one that might tell whether we ever get gun reform or additional support for our health care and education priorities. So don’t miss our next monthly meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at The Depot in Ashland. Our guest speaker will be Matt Rowe, Democratic Chairman of the First Congressional District is the guest speaker. He will discuss our chances for taking the House of Delegates and state Senate. Matt is a political analyst and former congressional candidate. We’ll have free drawings and, as always, the coffee is on us.

First Time in Our New Hangout

Don’t forget — we are changing our meeting location in October. We hate to bid adieu to Ashland Coffee & Tea, but we’re excited to be in a room called The Depot in Cross Brothers Grocery at 107 S. Railroad Ave., just about kitty corner to Ashland Coffee & Tea (across the railroad tracks). The meeting room seats 200, so let’s fill it up. ACT owner Cate Hawks so kindly helped us locate the new meeting space because her business is renting the room where we previously met to Yarn Universe. It is part of a novel marketing concept of mixing retail and coffee shops with the hope that one business will stimulate clientele for the other business. This is a financial move on the Hawks’ part to keep Ashland Coffee & Tea a successful coffee shop. We are so grateful for the many kindnesses Cate and Mike have shown us and look forward to ACT catering our events in the future as they did for the Blue Wave Bash. It was delicious!

The Depot room is on the right side as you face the store. Parking is available in back. HDC will still have free coffee at the meetings, and you will still be able to purchase breakfast sandwiches at the meeting. We’ll have signage just in case anyone gets confused. See you there!

Special Guest Speaker at our December Meeting--Don't miss this meeting!

State Senator Jennifer McClellan will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Hanover Democratic Committee on Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m. at The Depot, located on the right side of the Cross Brothers Building, 107 S. Railroad Avenue in Ashland. Sen. McClellan, who represents Hanover among other jurisdictions, was overwhelmingly re-elected to the General Assembly. We are so fortunate to have her as a guest speaker as she begins her next four-year term in the Virginia General Assembly.

Reorganization Caucus Will Be Held

Following Sen. McClellan's appearance, the biennial reorganization meeting will convene at 10:50 a.m. The State Party Plan requires County and City committees to reorganize every two years, at which time members rejoin, bylaws are passed and new officers are elected for a two-year term. Doors to the reorganization caucus will officially open at 10:45 a.m. (following the regular HDC meeting) and will close at 10:50 a.m. All those inline or in the room by 10:50 a.m. will be admitted to the Reorganization Caucus. Please click here for the official "Call to Caucus."  The rules for the Call to Caucus are here.
