Hanover County Democratic Committee

Moving Hanover Forward

We need your support

by Dan McGraw, HDC Chair

Please help us in any way you can. Without you, we have nothing. I have listened with great amazement from people like Gordon Silver and Toni Radler about the growth of the Hanover Democratic Committee. Although no youngster myself, I am a baby by comparison in terms of committee membership. I began attending meetings in 2015, when the committee was already significant in size. I watched it grow from 170 to over 300+. During that time, I heard about the times when there were just a handful of members.

And those members have kept this committee moving in the right direction. That is why we need your help. We must continue to expound upon the legacy of so many people who have given strength to Hanover Democrats like you and me. We need phone bankers, canvassers, logistics coordinators, social media specialists, financial donors, and people who can spread the message that “We are proud Democrats and we need more enthusiasts and activists and citizens yearning for a better America.”

Therefore, we need to get more Democrats elected in local, state, and national positions. We need you to do that with us. I was asked to share my vision as the newly elected chair to the Hanover Democratic Committee. My view is strength in numbers. More Democrats in PTA leadership positions, day-care volunteers, non-profits and local clubs, etc. The more involved you are in the community, the stronger our community will be.  I am proud of you.  As the message began, “Please help us in any way you can.” We are stronger in numbers and powerful beyond measure.

Invite your friends to join us. Tell your family to take a peek. Keep yourself involved. Let me know what I can do to encourage you and keep the light going. Taking on the role of the chair is an incredible task. I have already started to see the overwhelming number of hats Toni and those before her have had to wear. I am humbled by the feat, and I am up for the task. In 2019, we flipped the House and Senate. With your support, we have the opportunity to get even more Democrats elected.

I look forward to serving you.

At Our Next Meeting: A True Groundbreaker

At our next Hanover Democratic Committee meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from a true groundbreaker. Ghazala Hashmi will be our featured speaker at 10 a.m. on January 11 at The Depot. In November, Ghazala became the first Muslim American woman elected to the Virginia State Senate, winning the 10th Senate District which includes all of Powhatan County and parts of Richmond and Chesterfield County.

Not only that, but this remarkable woman helped tip the balance of power in the Senate to the Democrats, giving our party and our purpose unified control of state government for the first time in more than 25 years.

Ghazala was born in Hyderabad, India, and moved at the age of four with her family to the United States. Raised in Georgia, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University.

She and her husband Azhar moved to the Richmond area in 1991, and Ghazala has spent the past 25 years as a leading educator in Virginia’s college and university system. She currently serves as the Founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Reynolds Community College. She and Azhar have two daughters who were born and raised in Midlothian and educated in Chesterfield County public schools.

Ghazala overcame ugly campaign tactics to win the election. Her opponent employed doctored images of her to frighten voters and his campaign owned up to it. Fortunately, Ghazala’s strong messages on education and gun violence reduction resonated with voters in the 10th District. Now you’ll be able to hear and meet Ghazala at our meeting on Jan. 11.

And, as always, the coffee is on us!

We are excited to announce that the next monthly gathering of the HDC Men's Forum on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. at The Depot (107 S. Railroad Avenue, Ashland) will be a discussion among the candidates who have announced they are seeking the Democratic nomination for the First Congressional District.

At this point, the candidates running for the Democratic nomination are Phil Cox, Qasim Rashid, Kevin Washington and Vangie Williams. If other candidates announce between now and the forum date, they will be added to the lineup of forum speakers. Following the presentation, we will conduct an unofficial presidential candidate straw poll from among the attendees.

The forum will be moderated by Rich Meagher, a political science professor at Randolph-Macon College. Mr. Meagher was the moderator at our previous First Congressional District Forum about two years ago.
The purpose of our monthly HDC Men's Forums is to socialize, invigorate, educate and elect Democrats to office. The Men's Forum provides an opportunity for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics and hear interesting speakers in our predominately Republican, but slowly turning Democratic county.

Because of its scope, this month's forum is open to men and women from Hanover County and the surrounding counties in the First Congressional District. Please join us on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. RSVP to Nelson Vaughan at vnvaughan@aol.com or call his cellphone or text 201.826.7093, or call his landline 804.496.6217.
