In recognition of Black History Month, Carolyn Hemphill, founder of the Hanover County Black Heritage Society, gave an excellent presentation at the February meeting of the Hanover Democratic Committee. Representatives of the society brought an exhibit for HDC members to view. Among the items were tintypes, yearbooks, photographs from the 19th century and voter roll books that Hanover County maintained on the basis of race during the Jim Crow era.
Carolyn noted that the challenges faced today, such as attempts to whitewash racial history, differ somewhat from the past but still demand forceful, unified action. “I wonder how future generations will view us and what will our legacy be.” HDC members can help by becoming a member of the society through its website or volunteering.
