Hanover Democrats turned out in very strong numbers on Feb. 9 for the monthly meeting as they heard from two candidates for the Democratic nomination for statewide office.
Former Delegate Jay Jones of Norfolk, a candidate for attorney general, and Dr. Babur Lateef, a candidate for lieutenant governor, who is a physician and educator from Prince William County, told a packed audience about the need to retake statewide offices from the GOP in 2025.
They were greeted warmly by committee members who understand Virginia has a chance to show the nation how Democrats can and are ready to lead.
Jones is seeking the nomination to oust Jason Miyares, the current GOP attorney general who he called Donald Trump’s “pro bono” attorney.
“We have to remain vigilant every single day,” Jones said. “Everything Donald Trump does, Jason Miyares rubber stamps it.”
Lateef, the only school board chairman elected countywide, said he believes in building the party infrastructure and making the Democratic Party more competitive outside its traditional strongholds.
“It’s easy to win the blue districts as a Democrat but can you win where it’s a hostile crowd? I think that’s important.”
Chair Rachel Levy urged Democrats not to give in to feelings of disappointment and hopelessness. The 2025 elections represent a chance to reset the direction of Virginia and refocus attention on Democratic principles, she said.
