Congressional Candidates Face-OFf

We are excited to announce that the next monthly gathering of the HDC Men's Forum on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. at The Depot (107 S. Railroad Avenue, Ashland) will be a discussion among the candidates who have announced they are seeking the Democratic nomination for the First Congressional District.

At this point, the candidates running for the Democratic nomination are Phil Cox, Qasim Rashid, Kevin Washington and Vangie Williams. If other candidates announce between now and the forum date, they will be added to the lineup of forum speakers. Following the presentation, we will conduct an unofficial presidential candidate straw poll from among the attendees.

The forum will be moderated by Rich Meagher, political science professor at Randolph-Macon College. Mr. Meagher was the moderator at our previous First Congressional District Forum about two years ago.

The purpose of our monthly HDC Men's Forums is to socialize, invigorate, educate and elect Democrats to office. The Men's Forum provides an opportunity for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics and hear interesting speakers in our predominately Republican, but slowly turning Democratic county.

Because of its scope, this month's forum is open to men and women from Hanover County and the surrounding counties in the First Congressional District. Please join us on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m.

There will be no Men's Forums in December.  Please watch for details about a Men's forum for Congressional candidates on January 22.

This month's speaker will be Hope Jackson who is a passionate community activist and founding organizer of the Northern Neck Collective.  Her political outlook can be summarized as "Despair is not an Option."  But organizing and mobilizing the progressive forces of the community are options and that is exactly what she is doing.  The goals of the Northern Neck Collective are to:

1.  Create a strong, visible umbrella organization to support progressive groups within the community.

2.  Broaden the progressive base by attracting new members, including Millennials.

3.  Mainstream or normalize the Democratic presence in the traditionally conservative Northern Neck.

4.  Elect more progressive candidates.

The Northern Neck counties are part of the First Congressional District.  Democratic candidates there fight the same conservative headwinds as we do here in Hanover.  We have invited Hope to speak at our Forum because we here in Hanover share common values and objectives with Democrats in the northern Neck and we can learn from each other the best ideas to turn our counties blue.

All candidates are invited and encouraged to come.

Meet the Candidates at the next monthly gathering of the Hanover Democratic Men's Forum on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 pm at the home of Larry Diebold, 8326 Silkwood Court in Mechanicsville.  These Democratic Men's Forums provide an opportunity for Hanover Democratic men to meet, socialize, talk politics and hear interesting speakers.  Hors-d'oeuvres will be served.

These candidates have a great opportunity to continue the Blue Wave!  The Forum will give everyone an opportunity to meet and hear the non-incumbent candidates so we all can get to know them better, understand their issues and help get them elected.  There will be an opportunity for the attendees to ask questions.  This will also give the candidates a chance to speak in front of a friendly audience before going out into the public arena.

The candidates include:

Crystal Robens - Democratic candidate for the Hanover County BOS (Board of Supervisors) for the Beaverdam District.

Morgan Goodman - Democratic candidate for State Delegate from the 55th Congressional District (all of Hanover county west of Route 301.

Veena Lothe - Democratic candidate seeking the nomination for the State Senate from the 12th Senatorial District.

Stan Scott - Democratic candidate for State Senate from the 4th Senatorial District.

Let's keep our Blue Wave moving and return democracy to "We the People."  And let's get more Democrats to run so that we have a better chance of turning Republican incumbents out of office.  It's early yet and there may be many other Democratic candidates for the BOS and the Virginia General Assembly.  We'll invite those candidates to speak as they become involved.

As we all know we have two great Democratic incumbents who are also running and certainly deserve our support.

Faye Prichard - Democratic candidate for the BOS from the Ashland District.

Jennifer McClellan - Democratic candidate for the State Senate from the 9th Senatorial District.

The purpose of these monthly Men's Forums is to socialize, invigorate, educate and elect Democrats.  it is a great opportunity to get to know like-minded Democratic men in a way that you just can't in other venues in this predominately red (slowly turning blue) Republican county.  it also gives those who can't attend the monthly Saturday morning committee meetings a chance to get involved.  So please join us on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 pm.  Don't miss this opportunity to socialize and mobilize.
