JUNE MEN'S FORUM: LIVE/IN PERSON - MEET RACHEL LEVY, OUR 55TH DISTRICT DELEGATE CANDIDATE

Welcome to our first live/in-person Men's Forum in over a year, thanks to COVID. Come and actually see, converse, mingle and socialize with your HDC friends again, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23 at Dale Mann's home. The address is 12778 Mount Hermon Road, Ashland. Hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Now that the primary is over, the real work begins to make sure the Republicans don't take back our government and turn back the great progress we have made recently. We must elect our Democratic governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and delegate (senators are not running in this off-year election). Even if your candidate didn't win; the selected candidates, the Democrats and our Democracy need your full support. The Republicans learned that electing the president starts with local politics, so please come to our live Men's Forum at 7 p.m. on June 23, and meet and learn how you can help elect Rachel Levy, the Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates for the 55th District.

Rachel Levy is a public school teacher, parent, education expert, civil rights activist and long-time member of the HDC who already serves the people of the 55th District and now wants to serve them in the House of Delegates. She is running because the people of the 55th District deserve competent, independent-minded and service-oriented leadership. She believes in strong public schools, that healthcare is a human right, that we must protect our environment and conserve our natural resources, and that our criminal justice system must be fair and humane. She looks forward to being the speaker at the Men's Forum in June.

Our monthly Men's Forum, usually scheduled for the 4th Wednesday of the month, provides a candid way for Hanover's Democratic community to stay informed, invigorated and connected, with opportunities to talk politics with expert speakers in our slowly bluing county. We are grateful for your continued support.

Most of us have been vaccinated; anyone who has not been vaccinated, please wear a mask.

WHO'S WHO IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

Do you know who you are going to vote for in the Democratic Primary election on June 8 among the plethora of candidates, five for governor, six for lieutenant governor and two for attorney general? If not, then come join us at the Men's Forum at 7 p.m. on May 26 via ZOOM where you can learn everything you want to know about the candidates. This may even change your mind as to who you will vote for.

Who else could do a better job of giving the Men's Forum an honest unbiased assessment of the Democratic candidates running in the Democratic Primary on June 8 than HDC's own leader in Democratic politics -- Trevor Southerland. As most of you know, Trevor was the Executive Director of the Virginia House Democratic Caucus for the several years when the Democrats made such great strides. Trevor is not working for nor volunteering for any of the candidates.

Come join us at the Men's Forum to hear what Trevor has to say.

Please note that Rachel Levy is the only Democratic candidate running as our 55th District Delegate, therefore she does not have to run in the primary. We do not have a Democratic candidate running in the 97th District.

Our monthly Men's Forum (typically the 4th Wednesday of each month) provides a candid way for Hanover's Democratic community to stay informed, invigorated and connected, along with opportunities to talk politics and hear expert speakers in our slowly bluing county. We are grateful for your continued support.

MEET RACHEL LEVY and SARAH SAMS, CANDIDATES FOR 55TH AND 97TH DISTRICTS

After two highly informative forums on COVID and the General Assembly, please join us virtually at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, for our next Men's Forum featuring Hanover County's Democratic candidates for two separate seats in the House of Delegates. Dr. Rachel Levy is our candidate in the 55th House of Delegates District. Sarah Sams is our Democratic candidate in the 97th House of Delegates District.

The district lines will be the same as the previous years, as new district lines have not been drawn yet and will not go into effect until after the November elections. The 55th District includes Hanover County west of U.S. 301, most of Caroline County and a slice of Spotsylvania County. The 97th District includes Hanover County east of U.S. 301, King William County on the Middle Peninsula and all of New Kent County. The primary will occur on June 8th.

Sarah plans to have an open-door policy so her constituents can reach her easily and have open communications.  She has lived in Hanover County most of her life, graduated from Atlee High School and attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. She is in an online HR Management program with Bay Path University.

Rachel Levy is a long-time member of the HDC, a teacher, a community activist and a leader with a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy. She lives in Ashland with her husband and 3 children. Many of us know Rachel and her knowledge, enthusiasm, caring and support for her fellow citizens of Hanover County.  She wants to strengthen public education, increase access to health care (which she believes is a human right), preserve our environment, ensure that working people are paid fairly and enact tax reforms.

Come and learn more about Rachel Levy and Sarah Sams and their platform to deliver two new Democratic Delegates to represent Hanover County. The only way the Democrats are going to win is to get out the vote. Come learn how we can support Rachel and Sarah.

Our monthly Men's Forum provides a candid way for Hanover's Democratic community to stay informed, invigorated, and connected, with opportunities to talk politics with expert speakers in our slowly bluing county. We are grateful to be back to our regularly scheduled programming despite the ongoing pandemic and thank our members for their continued support.

2021 SESSION OF THE VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Please join us at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for our second Men's Forum of 2021 where HDC's own Morgan Goodman offers a review of the General Assembly's current session. The Democratic trifecta in the House, Senate, and Governor's mansion accomplished so much in 2020, and all of us are eager to learn what's next on the agenda.

Morgan's presentation will review the Assembly's progress on Democratic policies to date as well as addressing the bills still to be voted on. The session tentatively ends on February 27. As usual, the floor will open for questions towards the end of the program, but for time's sake, please forward them in advance if possible so our speaker has the opportunity to incorporate them into her talk. RSVP with your questions to Don Barth (donna.don@comcast.net) no later than Feb. 17.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH COVID-19 IN HANOVER COUNTY?

The Men's Forum makes its triumphant return after a brief holiday hiatus. This month, we're joined by Ms. Caitlin Hodge, the Chickahominy Health District's Public Information Officer and COVID Response Team Leader, for the latest on COVID-19 in our area.

Log into Zoom at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27, to learn about the county's pandemic response and upcoming vaccine distribution. Ms. Hodge holds a Bachelor of Science in community health from Ithaca College, along with a Masters in Public Health from the University of Albany.

The floor will open for questions following Ms. Hodge's presentation. To assure your question is responded to please forward your questions to Don Barth by January 20 who will forward them to Ms. Hodge.

Our monthly Men's Forum informs, invigorates and connects Hanover's Democratic community and has long provided a candid way for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics, and hear interesting speakers in our predominantly Republican, but slowing turning Democratic county.

We are grateful to be back to our regularly scheduled programming, despite the ongoing pandemic, and thank our members for their continued support.

Because of the holidays, the Men’s Forum will not be meeting in November and December. Please enjoy the holidays but please stay safe. See everyone in January.

2020 ELECTION:  THE INSIDE SCOOP

After two successful and thought-provoking convenings of our virtual Men's Forum, zoom in for our next digital gathering at 7 p.m.on Wednesday, October 28 for the inside scoop on the 2020 election. With less than one week until the election, our in-house expert politico Trevor Southerland will take us through this year's race, the states in play, the post-election landscape and more. The topic is very expansive, so we want to give Trevor proper space for the subjects we particularly care about.  Be sure to send all questions to me, Don Barth, ASAP.

The Men's Forum has long provided a candid way for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics, and hear interesting speakers in our predominantly Republican, but slowly turning Democratic county. Despite the ongoing pandemic, we are grateful for the opportunity to connect virtually, and to be back to our regularly scheduled programming.  Thanks to everyone for your support.

REDISTRICTING AMENDMENT: YES or NO?

Our first virtual Men's Forum in August was a very successful, informative session with much discussion, thanks to our guest speaker Qasim Rashid.

The Hanover Democratic Men's Forum is continuing strong with our second virtual program. All of us understand the threat partisan redistricting represents to our institutions, but what can Virginia actually do about it? What should we do? Proposals to combat gerrymandering languished for years while the legislature was under Republican control.

Now, with a new Democratic majority in place, the House and Senate are carrying the issue to November's ballot in the form of the Virginia Redistricting Commission Amendment.

In preparation for the vote, join us via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23 for a discussion on the pros and cons of the proposed Virginia Redistricting Commission Amendment. We'll hear from Brian Cannon of Fair Maps VA on why we should vote "YES" and Trevor Southerland on why we should say "NO."

September's forum represents an opportunity for Hanover's Democrats to hear differing perspectives from well-informed people on a very important issue. We are asking people to submit in advance questions on the Amendment and redistricting in Virginia to Don Barth (donna.don@comcast.net) no later than 11:59 p.m., September 16, so our speakers can incorporate them into their presentations, though questions may be asked from the floor time permitting.

The Men's Forum has long provided a candid way for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics, and hear from interesting speakers in our predominantly Republican, but slowly turning Democratic county. Despite the ongoing pandemic, we are grateful for the opportunity to connect virtually, and excited to get back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Our topic “How the Legislature's Decisions Will Affect Hanover County” will be presented by Faye Prichard, our only Democratic representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.

The purpose of our monthly HDC Men's Forums is to socialize, invigorate, educate and elect Democrats to office. The Men's Forum provides an opportunity for Hanover Democrats to meet, talk politics and hear interesting speakers in our predominately Republican, but slowly turning Democratic county.

Please come to socialize, get educated and invigorated at 7 p.m. on TUESDAY, February 25. RSVP to Don Barth at donna.don@comcast.net, call his cellphone or text 856-889-5905, or call or leave a message at his landline 804-299-3160.

Congressional Candidates Face-OFf

We are excited to announce that the next monthly gathering of the HDC Men's Forum on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. at The Depot (107 S. Railroad Avenue, Ashland) will be a discussion among the candidates who have announced they are seeking the Democratic nomination for the First Congressional District.

At this point, the candidates running for the Democratic nomination are Phil Cox, Qasim Rashid, Kevin Washington and Vangie Williams. If other candidates announce between now and the forum date, they will be added to the lineup of forum speakers. Following the presentation, we will conduct an unofficial presidential candidate straw poll from among the attendees.

The forum will be moderated by Rich Meagher, political science professor at Randolph-Macon College. Mr. Meagher was the moderator at our previous First Congressional District Forum about two years ago.
