The Virginia Public Access Project is the best source of nonpartisan political information in the state. VPAP produces a free, daily newsletter that summarizes major policy and political headlines in Virginia.
The Virginia Mercury is an independent, nonprofit online news organization covering state government and policy. It generally gives more play to progressive issues and covers policy in much more detail than the daily paper.
The Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, directed by Prof. Larry Sabato, is a popular forecasting newsletter based on political science research.
Current Democratic Officeholders
Sen. Mark Warner is in his third term in the Senate. He previously served as governor from 2002 to 2006 before being elected to the Senate in 2008. He is chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence and a member of the Senate Finance, Banking, Budget, and Rules committees.
Sen. Tim Kaine was mayor of Richmond and governor from 2006 to 2010. He was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2016. He serves on the Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations and Health & Education committees.
Supervisor Faye Prichard recently won reelection to the Hanover Board of Supervisors, where she is the lone Democrat. She is formerly mayor of Ashland and a former chair of the state Board of Health.
