The Hanover Democratic Committee appreciated the opportunity to hear from State Sen. Aaron Rouse of Virginia Beach at its monthly meeting on Mar. 10. Rouse related a little of his own personal story of hard work and dedication that landed him on scholarship playing football at Virginia Tech and in the NFL.
But he felt he had more to give, and established a nonprofit in Virginia Beach and later became active in civic affairs. He won an important special election to the Senate in January 2023 and has been making a mark in Richmond ever since.
“We have no bigger challenge this year than to reelect President Biden,” he said. calling Biden “a man of wisdom.”
As chair of the Privileges & Elections Committee, he sees the ways in which the right to vote is threatened. “In Virginia, we have always been the leader of this country so we have to come out in droves.”
Rouse discussed the concluded 2024 General Assembly session, noting that Democrats made historic investment in K-12 and higher education. The legislature also passed gun safety measures that Gov. Youngkin vetoted, including a common sense measure to require convicted domestic abusers to surrender their firearms once they become legally prohibited from possessing them.
Thank you to Sen. Rouse and his wife Jennifer, a city councilor in Virginia Beach, for visiting the HDC.
