Tom HIcksTom Hicks

Tom, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, former Navy nuclear submarine officer, engineer, businessman, husband and father, believes in and wants to serve his country again.

As the son of an Italian war refugee whose home and town were destroyed in World War II, Tom developed a deep appreciation for the freedoms enjoyed in this country that are, sadly, not universal.  As a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and Navy submarine officer during the cold war, Tom experienced firsthand the obligation and sacrifice required of those who serve.  As a small business owner and engineering consultant to large companies and national laboratories, he brings to this contest experience and a determination to take on today’s issues, with an eye on the interests of future generations.

Tom Hicks grew up and attended high school in East Islip, New York.  He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979 with an engineering degree.  After graduation, Tom completed post graduate studies in nuclear power and served as an officer aboard a nuclear-powered submarine through six deployments.  For the past 30 years, Tom has been a small business owner and engineering consultant.  Tom has been married to his wife Claudia, a retired nurse, for 34 years.  He is the father of two grown sons.

Tom explains his reasons for running in Virginia’s First Congressional District:

“I believe that this nation’s success depends on its commitment and capacity to develop and nurture the capabilities of its citizens.   This requires us to embrace diversity, recognize the realities of a changing marketplace, appreciate the value of hard work, and commit to something greater than ourselves.

I believe that as citizens, we have an obligation to be informed about the issues that affect our community and our nation.  Toward that end, I will communicate with you openly and honestly about important issues and necessary actions.   I believe that we must listen respectfully to one another.  As your congressman, I will seek first to listen and understand, and promote involvement by each member of our community.

I am running for office because I believe that the political process at the national level is broken and is in need of citizen-patriots willing to collaborate and compromise for the good of all citizens.   The House of Representatives has become so partisan that the major issues of our time are not being solved. Congress has become ineffectual and a change in its leadership is necessary. I bring the strengths and abilities necessary to be effective in Congress, including leadership, integrity, stamina, willingness to collaborate and the ability to define and resolve issues.  My military experience, business experience, compassion, respect for others, patriotism and love of country will serve as my foundation and my rudder as I pursue this endeavor.

Our Nation, our Commonwealth, and our District face a decision in 2018 to either continue with the current policies of a Republican-led House of Representatives that favor the interests of the wealthy over the middle class and poor, discrimination over equality, partisanship over bipartisanship, and isolationism over leadership, or to choose a new path that is founded on pragmatic solutions to our country’s most serious issues, while protecting the environment and the interests of the young, the poor and the disadvantaged.“
